Who is the church of Christ that meets at Winchester Road East?
- Who is the church of Christ that meets at Winchester Road East?
We at Winchester Road East church of Christ strive to be Christians only as outlined in the examples in the New Testament. We are not a “denomination”, we simply strive to be the church that Christ established that we find in the New Testament.
- What about the people?
At Winchester Road East church of Christ, we strive to be friendly, loving, and above all Christian in our attitude towards those who choose to worship with us. After all, we have a lot to be happy about! God has sent his Son to redeem us from our sins so that we may have the opportunity to spend an eternity in heaven with Him! We sincerely hope that whenever you choose to join us for worship, you will feel like our welcome and honored guest.
- What about the singing?
Probably one of the first things that you will notice when you enter our auditorium is that there are absolutely no musical instruments used in our worship service.
As there is no example of instrumental worship in the examples that we have of Christ’s church during the time of the Apostles, we sing A Capella, as instructed in Ephesians 5:19:
- Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, Eph 5:19, NIV.
- How is the church at Winchester Road East governed?
Christ is the head of His church. For local congregational matters, there is a plurality of elders or presbyters who serve as the governing body. These men are selected by the local congregation on the basis of qualifications set down in the Scriptures (I Tim. 3:1-7). Serving under the elders are deacons, teachers, and evangelists or ministers. The latter do not have authority equal to or superior to the elders. The elders are shepherds or overseers who serve under the headship of Christ according to the New Testament, which is a kind of constitution. There is no earthly authority superior to the elders of the local church.
- When do you take the Lord’s Supper?
- For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. I Corinthians 11:23-26, NIV
Christ instituted the Lord’s Supper as a memorial of his sacrifice on the cross. We have examples in the New Testament that the early Christians observed this memorial on a weekly basis on the first day of the week:
- On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. Acts 20:7, NIV
- Is Sunday School / Bible Study available?
At Winchester Road East church of Christ, we offer classes for all ages – infant to adult. We have many classrooms, and have classes based on age on Sunday morning and Wednesday night.
On Sunday nights, the adults all meet in the auditorium for Bible Study, and the children meet in the large classroom for an interactive study.
